The L.A. Kimono Club, a kimono enthusiasts’ club based in Los Angeles, will hold a yukata workshop on Saturday, July 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Culture Room, located on the fifth floor of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, 244 S. San Pedro St. in Little Tokyo,.

Akane Mashimo, the club president and a certified kimono dresser and instructor from the Kyoto Kimono Gakuin Kimono School, will serve as the instructor.

In addition to lessons on how to dress yourself in a yukata and a hanhaba obi, there will be a demonstration of arranging the obi and a mini fashion show by club members.

Mashimo encourages participation, saying, “I hope you will learn to wear a yukata before the Nisei Week Festival. For those who already know the basics of dressing, I will share tips on how to dress more beautifully. Enjoy going out in a yukata this summer.”

Participants are asked to bring their own yukata. If you don’t have one, email [email protected] in advance. Rental or purchase of yukata is also available.

The workshop fee is $20 per person. Participation is limited to 20 participants, and registration will close once capacity is reached.

The L.A. Kimono Club, established in 2000, works to widely promote Japanese traditional culture through kimono, including hosting kimono contests and kimono shows during New Year’s festivitiies.
