bamboo and petalsThe Japanese American Cultural and Community Center presents its sixth annual flower arrangement exhibition, “On the Veranda: Bamboo & Petals,” on Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the JACCC’s George J. Doizaki Gallery.

Three distinct flower schools from the Los Angeles ikebana chapter will be featured: Sogetsu, Ikenobo, and Ohara-Ryu. Professor Yoichi Mizutani from Ikenobo headquarters in Kyoto will offer special flower arrangement at the reception on Saturday at 1 p.m.

This year’s exhibition is organized in memory of the victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

The Veranda is the space between man and nature, between structure and garden, between here and there. It is the space that lingers in-between, the tradition that pulls us into both worlds. The Veranda is a Japanese cultural phenomenon that understands this space between man and nature, which heightens the experience of true viewing of things that surround us.

The 2014 spring season of the “On the Veranda” program series continues this exploration of Japanese culture with the support from the JBA (Japan Business Association of Southern California), the Southern California Gas Company, Mutual Trading Co., and Miyako Oriental Foods Inc. The JACCC will continue to present informative and insightful workshops by trained masters.

The JACCC is located at 244 S. San Pedro St. in Little Tokyo. Free admission. For more information, visit www.jaccc.org.
