L.A. Kansai Club and Karin Creation present the Spring Singing Festival on Sunday, April 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, 815 E. First St. (at Vignes) in Little Tokyo.
Amateur and professional singers will perform nostalgic Japanese tunes with a focus on the Showa era. Seniors in particular are invited to enjoy the show and see old friends.
Keiro is providing financial support for this event as well as a bus from the South Bay for those who don’t have transportation. The cost is $10. Limited to 50 people on a first-come, first-served basis.
The show, co-presented by Nippon Kashu Kyoukai USA Tomonokai, is produced by Noriko Yonami, who was a member of Shochiku Kagekidan, the famed all-female revue. An award-winning singer and dancer who performed with the troupe from 1975 to 1983 under the stage name Karin Maki, Yonami came to the U.S. in 1987 and now operates a studio in Gardena. She is also active with the vocal group L.A. Dreams, the folk dance group Team Karachi Ondo, and the minyo group Matsutoyo Kai.
Take Nishi will serve as emcee. Singers will include Shoko Helm of L.A. Kinyou Kai, Junichi Araki of Lun Lun Karaoke, and Marisa Kosugi of Minyo Station.
Food and drink will be available for purchase.
