NYPD sources confirmed that Hwang, 58, was walking home near Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene around 8:50 p.m. when he felt pain to his neck, realized he was bleeding, and walked to Brooklyn Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The police classified the incident as an assault and are investigating.

In a tweet on Dec. 3, Hwang said, “Thanks for your outpouring of support! Doing fine — no pain, just a little tired — after Sunday’s random attack and expect a full recovery.”

In a statement sent to China Daily, Hwang recalled, “I suddenly felt as if I’d been punched in the back of the head. I started home but found myself unsteady on my feet and realized I was bleeding from my neck.

“From Boy Scouts, I remembered one should put pressure on a wound. And I did so while I proceeded home, dropped off the groceries, then headed towards the ER a block away

“I am grateful for the excellent care of the doctors at Brooklyn Hospital Center and Mount Sinai Hospital. I have full confidence that the NYPD is investigating my case vigorously, and will hopefully prevent another such random attack.”

Hwang won a Tony in 1988 for “M. Butterfly.” His other plays include “FOB,” “Golden Child,” “Yellow Face,” and “Chinglish,” which premiered in 2011 and is currently being performed at East West Players in Los Angeles. EWP’s theater is named in his honor.
