The george bataille eroticism meaningJapanese American Cultural and Community Center, 244 S. San Pedro St. in Little Tokyo, will present the following New Year’s events:

? “Hatsu-Kagami” or “First Mirror” is the theme for this year’s 16th annual Shikishi Exhibition opening Sunday, Jan. 5.

The shikishi paperboards will interpret the theme, expressing messages, wishes, and aspirations for 2014, as well as references to the Year of the Horse, and the rich display of creativity and originality will become the collective voice of our diverse community.

Shikishi are Japanese congratulatory cards of standard size, which have been used in Japan since the 12th century for painting and writing poetry. Today, shikishi are given as gifts to make a memorable or special occasion. Past participants have included celebrities, local personalities, politicians, writers, artists, priests, activists, and writers.

All entries must be received by Friday, Dec. 27. Send to: JACCC, c/o: Shikishi Exhibition, 244 S. San Pedro St., 2F, Los Angeles, CA 90012. The use of standard size shikishi paperboard is the requirement for participation in the exhibit. There is also a $10 entry fee.

Shikishi can be purchased at local Japanese markets.

??“Kotohajime,” JACCC’s signature New Year’s celebration, on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Aratani Theatre.

Welcome the Year of the Horse with a mesmerizing performance titled “Hatsu-Kagami” featuring traditional Japanese dance by Mme. Hisami Wakayagi, harmonica by Tetsuya Nakamura, and Zen archery by Ikkyu.

Also featured will be traditional Japanese New Year’s traditions, including the ritual shooting of the arrow, a purification ceremony, and kagami-biraki (breaking of the sake barrel).
