The traditional New Year’s Day Goma service will be held at Koyasan Buddhist Temple of Los Angeles, 342 E. First St. (between San Pedro and Central) in Little Tokyo, on Friday, Jan. 1, at 10 a.m.
Bishop Junkun Imamura will be the officiant and all ministers will participate in the Goma service, praying for each member’s health, peaceful mind, and a wonderful 2016, the Year of the Monkey (saru).
On New Year’s Day, over 3,000 people will visit the temple for Hatsumode. On Jan. 1, 2, and 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors may purchase omamori (amulet), hamaya(lucky arrow), omikuji(fortune-telling strip), ofuda(paper talisman), and ema(small wooden plaques for prayers or wishes).
