A restored 4K version of “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957, 2 hours and 41 minutes) will be screened on Sunday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the David Geffen Theatre, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, 6067 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles.
The screening is part of Oscar Sundays, an ongoing series celebrating films that have been honored at the Academy Awards.
During World War II, British POWs are forced to build a railway bridge across the River Kwai for their Japanese captors in occupied Burma, not knowing that Allied forces are planning a daring commando raid through the jungle to destroy it.
In 1958, the film won Oscars for best picture, best actor in a leading role (Alec Guinness), best director (David Lean), best screenplay based on material from another medium, best film editing and best music score.
Sessue Hayakawa (1886-1973), who played the POW camp commandant, Saito, was nominated for best supporting actor. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe and won a National Board of Review award. A matinee idol during the silent film era, Hayakawa received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
Free for Contributor level and above members. General admission: $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for students. For tickets, go to: https://www.academymuseum.org/en/programs/series/oscar-sundays
