Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Wind Rises” has been nominated for a 2014 Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Also nominated were “Blue Is the Warmest Color” (France), “The Great Beauty” (Italy), “The Hunt” (Denmark), and “The Past” (Iran). “The Wind Rises” is the only animated film nominated.

A total of 58 films made the shortlist in the category, including Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Like Father, Like Son.” The only other animated film on the shortlist was “Ernest & Celestine” from France.

The nominees in the Best Animated Feature Film category are “The Croods,” “Despicable Me 2,” and “Frozen.” Foreign-language films are not eligible in this category.

Miyazaki’s film, which he has said will be his last, is also Japan’s submission for the Academy Awards’ animation category. He won an Oscar in 2003 for “Spirited Away” and was nominated in 2006 for “Howl’s Moving Castle.”

Unlike his fantasy films, “The Wind Rises” tells the story of a real-life figure, aircraft designer Jiro Horikoshi.

Past winners in the Golden Globes’ foreign-language film category include Clint Eastwood’s “Letters from Iwo Jima” (2006) and Akira Kurosawa for “Rashomon” (1952). Kurosawa was also nominated for “Dreams” (1990), “Ran” (1985), “Kagemusha” (1980) and “Red Beard” (1965).

The Golden Globe nominees were announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Thursday. The ceremony and telecast will be held on Jan. 12. For more information, visit www.goldenglobes.com.
