In a speech to his supporters given at 4 a.m. Friday following the results of the EU referendum, Ukip leader Nigel Farage proclaimed, "Let June 23 go down in our history as our independence day," calling the outcome a victory not just for Britain, but for all of Europe. Farage's statement has been met by critics with disgust, specifically in reaction to his suggestion that independence had come "without having to fight, without a single bullet being fired." Many believe this choice of words to be in poor taste and spoken in flagrant disregard for the recent murder of Labour MP Jo Cox.
